Every day must be a vacation for you…”
Honey, if I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard that line from friends, family, or even guests on board, I’d have enough to buy my own private island.
Here’s the truth: working on a cruise ship is NOT the same as being on vacation. Sure, I’ve got the Lido Deck sunsets, the atrium parties, and the endless buffet at my fingertips—but let’s keep it real, I’m not here sipping piña coladas in a lounge chair. I’m working those parties, running those shows, and hyping up thousands of guests like their cruise depends on it (because it kinda does).
The Reality Check
Long hours? Yup. Sometimes I’m hosting morning trivia at 9am and closing out the deck party at midnight. Coffee & Energy drinks is basically a food group.
Always “on”? You bet. Even when I’m tired, homesick, or just not in the mood, the show must go on. Guests don’t get to see “sleepy TJ”—they get Fun Squad TJ.
Living at work? Let’s just say when you live, eat, and breathe your job on the same ship, there’s no such thing as “clocking out.”
But Here’s the Tea
Would I trade it? Not a chance.
Because while it’s not a vacation, it is an adventure:
I’ve danced under Caribbean stars.
I’ve hosted game shows that turned strangers into best friends.
I’ve made memories with people I may never see again, but who will never forget their cruise.
So no, it’s not margaritas and hammocks every day. But it’s laughter, energy, and once-in-a-lifetime moments—day after day. And honestly? That’s way better than a vacation.
